What is RECD - Retrofit Emission Control Device
EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE

What is
RECD?

A Retrofit Emission Control Device is an after-treatment system installed on existing diesel generators to significantly reduce harmful exhaust emissions and meet CPCB compliance requirements.

How RECD Reduces Emissions

Understanding the technology behind cleaner diesel exhaust.

The Filtration Process

  1. 1

    Exhaust Capture

Hot exhaust gases from the DG set enter the RECD system through the exhaust pipe.

  2. 2

    Oxidation Stage

Diesel Oxidation Catalyst converts CO and hydrocarbons into less harmful compounds.

  3. 3

    Particulate Filtration

Diesel Particulate Filter traps soot particles, preventing them from entering the atmosphere.

  4. 4

    Clean Exhaust Release

Treated, cleaner exhaust is released with significantly reduced harmful emissions.

Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC)

Oxidizes carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) into carbon dioxide and water vapor.

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)

Captures and stores exhaust soot (particulate matter) to prevent atmospheric release.

Catalytic Converter

Reduces harmful emissions through chemical reactions with precious metal catalysts.

Exhaust Gas Treatment

Additional treatment systems for specific pollutant reduction requirements.

Emission Reduction Achieved

CPCB type-approved RECDs achieve significant reduction in harmful pollutants.

Why RECD is Mandatory

Understanding CPCB regulations and compliance requirements.

CPCB Norms

All DG sets above 15 kVA must comply with Central Pollution Control Board emission standards in non-attainment cities.

Type Approval

RECD systems must be type-approved by CPCB to ensure they meet specified emission reduction standards.

Emission Standards

RECDs must achieve minimum 70% reduction in particulate matter and significant reduction in other pollutants.

Non-Compliance Penalties

Facilities operating non-compliant DG sets face penalties, closure notices, and legal action under environmental laws.

Supporting India's National Clean Air Programme (NCAP)

The NCAP aims to achieve 20-30% reduction in PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations. RECD installation on DG sets is a critical component of this national initiative.
